Formic Tube Vintage
Topflight true tube circuit guitar preamp Formic Tube Vintage in stompbox format and really compact size can be used both in power amp and guitar amp. Formic tube has special line out to use it straight to PA or mixer. Also it has out for headphones. These two outs are regulated by volume knob.
There are clean and drive mode switch and the bright switch in the preamp
The main button has two modes of work (you can choose the necessary one by using switcher on the right side): either switching between drive/clean channel and bypass or between drive channel and clean channel without bypass, if you need both of them.
Formic Tube Vintage is based on two tubes 12AX7 and 6SJ7. It was inspired by famous vintage, highly-valued and rare preamps, such as Universal Audio, Neve and others. A lot of time was spent to choose all the best parts and components that now are in this preamp. During tests the beta version of the preamp was given to guitarists of different styles. They used it in concerts and studios and gave the best opinion of Formic Tube Vintage. Also the big work was made in studios – tests and comparison of Formic Tube Vintage and world famous studio guitar preamps were made and we got high approval of our preamp. While these tests, suggestions to make rack version of Formic Tube Vintage guitar preamp was received and we were really pleased of the results. Our goal was to make superb device that will become “must-have” for any music style guitarist and will be essential part of the pedalboard during all the music life. And we reached the goal by making our Formic Tube Vintage – hi-end class guitar preamp.
Clean mode gives you mellow, bright tone with great attack. You can use it like EQ/boost into input of the amplifier and you will get a large frequency range.
Clean channel got a lot of head room, that’s why you always will have crystal tone.
For example, several tests were made on Fender Twin Reverb. After playing on Formic Tube Vintage we switched to bypass and found out that tone become not such mellow and crystal. But once you turn on Formic Tube Vintage clean channel back and you get bright, warm, mellow, detailed, well-defined tone with good sustain. And it seems like you take your tone out of some confined space and it “get a lungful of fresh air”. This mode is good not only for for those guitarists who play with picks, but for those who play with fingers fingers or tapping.
Drive mode has his own character. Gain knob is really sensitive and allows changing your tone from low gain to high gain, while treble and middle knobs forming your tone the way you need it. You’ve got myriad of combinations of tone from smooth, warm crunch/OD to “razor-sharp”. OD got great dynamics and you will get perfect response from your guitar playing. Detailed tone makes “readable” all the guitar chords and let you get perfect fat sound whenever you play loud or low volume. Excellent sustain no matter with high or low gain gives you opportunity to have sensitive tone. Formic Tube Vintage is perfect for almost all guitar player styles.
This mode let you bring more bright to any of channel (Clean or Drive). It works with low gain under 3-4 on the gain scale. It’s great to use it with neck pickup with clean or drive mode.
This out is an active low pass –hi pass filter some special improvements - so it works great to PA or mixer without any changes of guitar signal. This out gives you an opportunity to play clean or drive channel in case when there are no chance to use guitar amplification. Also it can be used for recording.
Nice addition for comfort use at home when you’ve got the mood to turn on your pedalboard or would like practice before the concert.
Formic Tube Vintage performed itself great in different styles of music and it easily can replace many of tube amp preamps or make their tone better, richer and really gorgeous. With Formic Tube Vintage in your pedalboard you will always have great tone at any concert or in studio.
Opinions and impressions of guitarists who tested beta version of Formic Tube Vintage were used in the review.
